SHORT DOCUMENTARY ON COUNCIL OF EUROPE SYRIAC RESOLUTION 1704
Following from the landmark Resolution 1704 in the Council of Europe on 27 January 2010, the Syriac Universal Alliance has released a Short Documentary which can now be viewed exclusively on YouTube. The Short Documentary can be viewed in two parts (1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u36-2IOlqlw and (2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66pYFsvK4HM. This Documentary will officially premiere soon on SuryoyoSat Television.
Following heavy influence and direction from the Syriac Universal Alliance, the Council of Europe made the historical decision of agreeing to Resolution 1704. The SUA worked tirelessly in order to inform all Council of Europe Parliamentarians about the plight of the Syriac (Aramean) people. Dr. Pieter Omtzigt, Dutch MP and CoE Parliamentarian, was the main protagonist who lead the charge during the Council of Europe meetings.
What the Syriac Universal Alliance achieved is unprecedented. This is the first International Resolution which highlights the problems faced by the Syriac (Aramean) people and it must be applauded worldwide. The Resolution focused on minority rights in Turkey and Greece but with specific reference to the Syriac (Aramean) people, stating the following:
(1) Land Theft - The Council of Europe recognises the precarious and well-known situation of the Mor Gabriel Monastery and for the first time, also the unlawful expropriation of significant amounts of land in Tur Abdin. This is land which historically and legally belongs to a multitude of other ancient Syriac monasteries, churches and proprietors in Southeast Turkey (Article 19.6);
(2) Indigenous Status and Protection - The Council of Europe agreed in the Resolution that Turkey must officially recognise, promote and protect the indigenous Syriac (Aramean) people in Turkey as a minority in compliance with international law. The result being Arameans can officially educate in their Aramaic mother tongue (Article 19.7); and
(3) Monitoring – The Turkish State must report back to the Council of Europe by February 2011, the process it has made to comply with the Resolution (Article 20).
The Syriac Universal Alliance recommends you see www.sua-ngo.org for a copy of recent press releases on this matter and others. The SUA will continue to inform you in relation to upcoming news and developments in these matters.
Best Regards Syriac Universal Alliance.
